Welcome!

Hi! I am Dr. David Burgess. I have taught at Rivier for almost 40 years, but have recently retired. I have three children (twin boys and a girl) who are all married with two children each. So I have six young grandchildren (two boys and four girls). I like working with wood and have bought some new woodworking tools to use in my retirement.

This course will introduce you to some fundamental concepts in the physical sciences. Examples from everyday life are used to identify and promote an understanding of some basic principles that govern the physical world. Life-long learning skills such as logical reasoning, critical thinking, modeling, and communication skills are emphasized.

This semester the course is completely online. There will be a combination of days when we meet synchronously and days when we meet asynchronously. The default is to meet synchronously. The days we meet asynchronously are identified in the course schedule that I have prepared.

The course will be administered through the Canvas Modules section. You should start at the top and work your way down without skipping anything. They are ordered day by day through the whole semester.

Click on Modules in the menu on the left to begin.

When you are doing webpage homework you will have to identify yourself by logging in. This is normal and necessary to be able to correctly assign you to your homework. The username to logon is your first initial and last name, all lower case and no spaces. If you have trouble logging on to one of our pages or have any other questions contact Dr. Burgess using your Rivier email right away (don't use the Canvas conversation tool, it take longer for me to reply).
