Welcome to BUSS 220 Financial Accounting

Hello, students! Welcome to this course. I am so excited to work with you this semester and assist you in achieving your educational goals. You are welcome to call me Dr Kiprop. I truly look forward to our class and getting to know each of you. One of the many reasons I love teaching this particular course is the real world applications we can share. However, please note that this is a computation intensive course that will provide you with knowledge, skills and the ability to apply various accounting concepts and principles that managers use in making crucial business decisions everyday. In this class we will cover various foundational topics in accounting including the accounting cycle, preparation of key financial statements, merchandise accounting, as well as looking at accounting as an information system.

Class Expectation. As you have noticed your textbook is FREE!!! The expectation is that with the course text already integrated into the Canvas course shell this will help you access the study material to help prepare for the each class beforehand. Please go through all the web pages assigned in each module to familiarize yourself with the material before each class to facilitate our class discussions and/or class work. In order to succeed in this course, classwork alone is not enough. Students need to make time outside of class to review the course material in the textbook, as well as material covered in class - power point slides, in-class activities as well as their own notes taken in class to help you prepare for the quizzes and exams.

Participation. Your attendance and participation will make up 15% of your total grade. You earn this grade through physically showing up in class as well as your active participation in class which includes active engagement in the assigned in-class activities, in pairs or in groups, using technology when/as permitted by instructor as well as ensuring that you respect other students' right to learn.

Statement on Classroom Behavior. Please refer to the Student Handbook for information on this policy. Additionally, to facilitate learning for everyone, students MUST adhere to these classroom rules:

Be respectful: Treat others with respect, including your professor and classmates. This includes respecting their right to learn by avoiding any disruptive behavior in class.
Be prepared: Come to class on time and with the required materials.
Listen: Listen to the instructor and follow directions.
Ask for help: If you need help, ask for it.
Raise your hand: Before speaking or leaving your seat, raise your hand.
Do your best: Make an effort to learn the material and complete assignments.
Have a positive attitude: Have a positive attitude. Being a successful learner starts with having a towards learning.

Statement on Student Use of Electronic Devices in the Classroom. Regarding the use of electronic devices (such as cell phones, tablets, iPads, laptops, etc.), students may not use these or other electronic devices during class unless permitted by the course instructor. If use of these devices is permitted by the instructor, they are to be used for appropriate class activities only. If a learning disability is substantiated to require the use of one or more of these items, the student must contact the Office of Disability Services (603) 897-8497, which will then work with the student and the course instructor as appropriate to facilitate whatever determination is reached regarding reasonable accommodations.
